Hello everyone! Nice forum you got ere' Well here's my problem
I have a 150cc Gator scooter, or Jonway, or GY6 knockoff and it won't turn on. The electric start does not work, nor does the kickstarter. The battery is charged and working well. The starter relay looked a little bit burnt where the nuts were. So, I'm guessing that would cause the electric start to fail?
The key lock cylinder does not turn all they way. All the lights work and so does the horn. I removed the cylinder from the scooter and ignition switch. When I turned the key, it moved all the way through. But, when I mounted it back, it began doing the same thing and only turning half way.
There was no spark so I just replaced the spark plug and coil wire. It still isn't firing, I should also mention that I did the thumb test and it blew by finger right off. I think the spark plug was dry, so is it a fuel issue?
I got this scooter from a trade, the guy said it ran good, then on a cold day it stopped working. Now that I'm thinking about, its probably fuel.

i'm a little confused how you checked compression with thumb and spark if the starter isn't functioning. normally the first thing i would check if i had no spark is the cdi. the burnt wires near the solenoid should be fixed first. i'm not very knowledgeable with electrical circuits but i would replace the burnt wires and make sure you have a good ground. seems like you have multiple issues

I used the kickstarter while I had my finger in the spark plug hole only way I am able to crank it atm. It just doesn't turn on.

I always try another CDI if I find no spark. There are other reasons a spark may not happen as well. Try to get a spark before seeing if you don't have gas, because you already know there's no spark and gas does not ignite without it.
Common causes for no spark:
-No power from stator to CDI -No power from CDI to ignition coil -No power or bad connect between coil head and boot (maybe loose wire?) -No power from boot to spark plug or loose connection -Bad or wrong spark plug
If you check the stator wires with a multimeter and see there is power (AC) from them, then you move onto the CDI since this is the next spot the power goes from the stator.
Then check if the CDI is okay (no easy way to test it besides using another known working CDI from a buddy or your parts bin).
If it still doesn't fire with a known working CDI then move onto the ignition coil. You can connect a wire from the green terminal on the ignition coil to the frame for extra grounding, use something thick, I use 12 gauge. Unscrew the wire from the coil and the boot, and cut about a quarter to a half inch off each end, then screw them back on and connect it back up to the wires and the spark plug. If that doesn't work try another known working coil.
Try another spark plug, NGK is the most used brand in scooters because of it's reliability.
If you STILL don't have a spark, then throw the scooter out a window.
As far as the electric starter goes, it's easy to rewire it and make it work, but let's get you sparking first.

u STILL don't have a spark, then throw the scooter out a window. proly not good advice but that is certainly how some of us feel about our broken down rides.

Sounds like a short may have happened at the key switch. Since it won't turn, I'm thinking the short melted it a bit. The burnt wires definitely indicates a short somewhere. If you bypass the key switch, will it turn over?

I won't be able to check the CDI until I order it and it arrives. I made the mistake of purchasing a new coil locally with a %100 markup so, needless to say I'll be order the rest of my scooter parts online. I replace the corroded coil and installed a new NGK spark plug. The scooter was owned by a teen for about two years. He didn't know too much, so its seen* some things. However, its in alright shape, 08' 3.3k miles. Tomorrow I'll grab my multimeter and start checking the connections. I was confused as to how spark worked on these engines seeing how you can kickstart it with a dead battery, so thanks for the pointers. I'm also currently replacing the wire harness on my girlfriends camry–and I'm pretty much hating anything to do with spark right now hah.

If you bypass the key switch, will it turn over? I'm an electrical novice; I can solder, connect wires, check for voltage–but that's about the extent of my abilities at the moment. How do you bypass the key switch? Teach me your ways I read that if you disconnect the ignition switch you can sometimes kickstart it. Needless to say, it didn't work.

If you bypass the key switch, will it turn over? I know someone with a scoot that needs a new ignition switch with the same exact issue. What caused it was someone jammed a flathead into it trying to force turn the lock and got the lock jammed. I would suppose he would have noticed melting or burning of the switch when he took it apart. The only way I know to bypass the ignition switch is to bridge the gap between the big nut terminals on the solenoid by connecting them with a large screwdriver with a rubber handle. I suppose if you knew the solenoid worked you could also just add a wire that goes from the battery to a push button to the thin red and yellow wire on the solenoid to do the same thing as what happens when you press the starter button and hold the brakes with the key turned to "on."

check the grounds and the fuse.
