I'm tempted to get one of those engine kits for my bicycle, I could use it as a backup for my scooter and to have fun offroading in the mountains around my house.

Is it too complicated to install? I can handle a wrench, but I'm not a trained mechanic, I'm self taught.

What about the bike brakes, I assume that disk brakes are a must? My bike has the old style rubber brakes.

I have an electric bicycle top speed is 23mph, rode it exclusively for 4 years before I got my first scooter. It's a mountain bike, but it's really too heavy for anything but moderate to easy trails. Luckily in Nevada, electric bikes are allowed on all pedestrian pathways, so I have plenty of places to ride. I would think a gas engine would do much better and probably weigh less. I have seen several kits like the one you posted being driven around town, and they are noisy, but look like they are a lot of fun! Disc brakes are a must for safety!

I had the gas assist bike for about 5 years. It was a lot of fun, but I sold it when I moved to an area where the roads were not suitable.
I have an e-bike now. Gas engines are more fun, but I needed the stealth offered by and electric kit.
They are relatively easy to install (no welding required) and there are some good forums where you can get a lot of help building and maintaining a motorized bicycle.
