I just saw a car commercial selling a car with a system that is self braking.
In the commercial they show a teenager with his head completely up his rear end, watching a girl walk by as he and his father, the passenger, are seconds from rear ending a parked car.
The car self brakes, no one is surprised and what does the kid have to say? "Sorry".
No big deal. I just almost killed us and this car saved us.
What does this commercial say about the caliber of future drivers and the expectations that will be placed on them?
I think it says any dummy will be allowed to drive, with the expectation that you can basically do whatever you want, pay no attention to the road, and that will be fine.
I just hope future scooters have an anti idiot feature that stops people from hitting us if their car doesn't have this feature or it fails to work.
Maybe we DO need self driving cars, because the fusion of a dummy and a computer is bound to fail. Better to just have the computer drive and let the dummy sit in the back seat where he belongs, staring out the window, drooling on his shirt.

Someone on a scoot was just rear ended and killed here locally. Driving or stopped I always try to keep one eye on my mirrors.

Synchronized/Automatic transmission and power steering was the worst things that could've happened to cars, after that, stupid people where able to "drive" Now they want to make car brakes automatic as well

I know a guy whom is a bike driving teacher, when he is testing his students he always ask them what was the brand of the car behind them on the last stop light and what was the driver doing. 360° environment awareness is a must when riding a bike

That one has been around a while. There is another one where some people are backing out of a driveway and the minivan I think it was, auto-brakes before backing into the street into the path of a school bus or something. (don't remember exactly... it's been a while) I think the high end Lincoln has a feature that allows it to parallel park all by itself. (now that is a worthwhile feature to prevent little old.... er...... um....... parallel challenged car parkers from bumping into things. But here is my all time favorite auto driving car commercial... (somewhere I saw an uncensored version where there is no bleeping out of any of the dialog.) fun for Star Trek fans.

One thing I realize as I'm shaving my newly grey beard, is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Yes, there does seem to be more distractions these days, but the reality is that there have always been tons of distractions. Tech hurts as much as it helps, texting while driving is dangerous, and is proven more so every day. But so was driving solo while attempting to handle a fold up map and a cup of coffee back in the day, GPS that talks to you has made navigation safer (for the most part). Both are due to new technology, and some hurts, some helps. The father's reaction in that commercial is pretty ridiculous (mine would have been reading me the riot act), but kids and adults alike have been distracted by many more things than a pretty girl walking by since cars were invented.
There is some glimmer of hope for those who can't stand the safety of a cage, in the form of air bags for motorcyclists. There was one in the news last week that you wear as a backpack, and it surrounds your upper torso when deployed. Another that was developed last year is an airbag scarf that replaces the need for a helmet (bicycles only so far, but it's in development). Even if/when these and other newer/better safety devices come to market, it will still be up to us as riders to pay more attention than the cagers around us.

Just wait for the fully computer controlled car.....then you won't have to worry.

The father's reaction in that commercial is pretty ridiculous (mine would have been reading me the riot act)... Yes. The closest I have come to death while driving is while looking at a map. When I got a GPS I mounted it right in line with the steering wheel at the bottom of the windshield. It worked perfectly there and made it much safer to use than having it in the dash or over in the middle of the vehicle. I didn't have to take my eyes off of the road to use it that way. The dad's reaction is what bothered me. The commercial implies that you needn't even look where you are going and everything will be fine. It may even be true, but it's a scary thought that drivers are going to be thinking this way behind the wheel.

It's just one more example of removing any responsibility from idiots... It's now fairly accepted that if you have a car with a manual tranny, and some brain-dead kid steals it and erratic driving gets him or her caught because he or she doesn't know how to drive a stick-shift, YOU have trampled on HIS or HER civil rights...
It's the same "not MY fault" age-old rant; CARS cause ACCIDENTS... GUNS kill PEOPLE... ALCOHOL causes DRUNK DRIVING... and of course, that SMELL?... ah, the DOG did it... Yup, ACTIONS just don't have CONSEQUENSES anymore in this wonderful "Camelot" we live in here in the new "Peoples Republik of Amerika".
The "self-driving" cars are simply a product of a generation which simply will NOT function without texting 24-7, nose-buried-in-the-phone... In other countries, if you kill someone by doing something stupid while driving, you may get charged with murder. Here in Camelot, you may get charged with bad spelling...
This is pretty discouraging to any of us who grew up KNOWING that if you SCREWED UP, you were going to PAY BACK 10 TIMES what you screwed up. The PUNISHMENT was going to be ten-thousand times WORSE than the "mistake"... Screw up, and you'd wish you'd never have been born... Cruel maybe, but it sure did make us think twice before even THINKING about being stupid. Yup.
We've been TOO LONG without a military draft. A couple of years of ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE iron-fisted, hard-core, no-mercy MILITARY DISCIPLINE does wonders for one's sense of responsibility.
