I was surfing the web trying to see if I could locate suppliers of parts for my scooter and I happened upon a performance exhaust. Should a performance exhaust only be installed if you upgraded the air/fuel intake (not intake manifold)as well? I see a lot of people up-jet their carbs, performance air filter and CDI & Coil..... When you do that, you increase the amount fuel and air, and increase the burn rate so I can see why you would need a bigger exhaust..... But for me, I just think the performance exhaust looks sweet.... I'm not trying to gain any improvements other than the aesthetics.... It would be nice to gain a couple MPH, but that's not my goal.... However, I don't know if putting a performance exhaust on a stock will screw anything up.... Is it only for an upgraded engine or will it work fine on a stock GY6?

Taking the muffler off of my lance and running open header made it run very lean. Most "performance" exhausts are a straight through glasspack design so even though you have more pipe length than I did, youre still running a very free flowing setup and will need to up the jet size on your carb. Taking the carb off and swapping out jets is a pretty simple task. Jets can be bought in sets of 10 for 17 bucks, so you have different sizes to test with. I've gotten to where I can swap jets and be back running within 20 minutes. www.ebay.com/itm/181256197332?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I can scratch that idea then...
That's the kind of info I was looking for... If it's just big a glass pack tube, then I have zero interest in it.
My Havoc will reach 62MPH (55MPH avg easy) on level terrain and it's 100% stock. For now, that's plenty fast enough.
The way I look at it is like this, I paid 1699.99 for my 150cc, I can get a brand new 250cc for 2099.99. a $400.00 difference.
I've looked at the cost of BBk's seen the guys upjet their carbs and all the other upgrades to squeeze every MPH they can... But IMO,it's really pointless when you get out of the 50cc scooter range. The cost in upgrades would be every-bit (and could be way over depending upon upgrades) of $400... So why spend all the money and time when you could just spend the same (or less) money and get a scooter with 100cc's more?
In Michigan, Anything under 100cc is considered a scooter. With a scooter here, you do not have to insure or plate, only a registrations sticker... So if ya wanna skirt the law a bit, I get that...... But when ya get up to the 125cc and bigger it's just better economical sense to just go the next size up scooter as the cost difference between 150 and 250 is not that much....
However, I also get that people fall in love with their scoots and just wanna upgrade it... If I had more confidence in my mechanical abilities I would probably move over to the camp of upgrades. I wish I knew a scooter mechanic here in Michigan that I could intern with for a couple days a week... I really would like to know how to wrench on these scooters better.

I'm an IT guy myself, for a living I install and maintain old PBX phone systems as well as the new server based systems. Adopting a bit of know how to wrenching isn't as far of a stretch as you might think. Believe me, if you can look at a wiring schematic and make sense of it, 150cc gy6's are childs play. Sure as with anything there's going to be a bit of a learning curve, but you seem to have your head on straight so I'm pretty sure you're more than capable of handling it.
There is also the argument that it's not just about top speed. I'm planning on doing some serious mods to my scoot but I will have the CVT set up so that I never go over 60. It's just way too sketchy on this thing at those speeds. BUT getting from 0-60 as fast as possible can be the difference between life or death if I ever have to get out of the way of a rolling cage. As for the 250, I want to keep the fuel economy of the 150. High performance upgrades tend to give better fuel economy as long as you are not playing with it all the time. My last car had all kinds of work done under the hood and it got me over 30 MPG as long as I drove it like I had some sense. But if I was playing with it, I could see my gas gauge move.

Your in the right place , its a collective effort here (give and take) , some cross breeds . Like me I used to do component level repair on audio video (TV , VCR , Stereo laser disk dvd) and ac (air conditioning) . Circuit disection is something I do well . On the air conditioning side there is a lot of mechanical . This is a hobby for me so its not always about $ . I enjoy riding and others should as well . Don't fret about wrenching read posts here you will get a gut feeling on certain posters here . Then sort out the repeaters . You will do fine . John
