i am NOT a mech BUT i would say use 87 or 91- EDIT-------um thats supposed to b 89 not 91
and if you can always use a pump that has different hoses for different grades. other wise 1/2 ur gallon could be reg cheap stuff.
me, i always add a oz. of sea foam per gal, winter, summer all the time

My opinion and experience: Unless you are running a high compression engine or are having problems with pre-ignition (pinging) 87 octane works fine in most scooters. The higher octane can actually give less performance in a lower compression engine as the higher octane tends to slow down the combustion process. Unless you are having pre-ignition issues I would use the 87 octane.

I only use premium gas mostly nonethanol here is a list of stations pure-gas.org/I put 87 in an brand new scooter half a mile later the piston cracked . No problems ever with premium SeaFoam is a great additive to keep the fuel system clean

I think you had a bad piston.
Gasoline is another one of those religious experience things, everybody has an opinion and they are never wrong.
I use regular unleaded, mine runs fine. Seafoam? yeah I use it but not every tank and I just splash a little into the tank. It really does help for winter storage, I have also used Stabil for winter storage, especially on two stroke fuel, got to say SeaFoam has been good to me.

My scooter dealer makes everyone sign a disclaimer to only use premium gas and thank God they did not hold it against me . He said since mine was a secret 63 and any with a BBK has higher compression than a 49cc and to prevent risk of damage only use premium

Well, he had to blame something.
I was raised in the 60's when they had high compression motors to pump out as much power as they could with a carbureted motor, you could get 12 : 1 from the factory. If you ran regular in those they would ping like crazy. If you didn't get the ping everybody ran regular, cuz it was just more affordable at 27 cents a gallon versus 29 cents a gallon. If you wanted to try you could retard the timing to prevent the ping.
Lower octane fuel burns at a lower temperature causing it to try to push the piston back down before it should in a high compression motor. If you have a higher compression motor, sure you do have a need for a higher octane fuel.

I am lucky to have a few places that are ethanol free . My Echarm has so much compression which I use in braking rather than the brakes except when coming to a stop or need to slow down fast to avoid a cager or dog .
I have NEVER had a piston to crack in all of my many rides and years of being a wild teen . It later grenaded into pieces and is why I bought an Air Sal 50mm kit as I did not want a piston made from butter and recycled pot metal .
I use just a capfull of Seafoam every other fillup . I prefer to get gas where each grade has its own hose to avoid getting any 87 left in the line by a previous customer but almost all of the new pumps use a single hose grrrr

Over a few rides, (or tanks) you can feel what the bike likes most. Whatever accelerates fastest, and gives you best top speed, is your best gasoline. You could also check avg MPG's, though that is a bit harder to do on a scoot, >50cc which is not ridden WOT all the time, and varies a lot in the way ridden..

My 50cc, 150cc and 250cc all accelerate faster with 87 octane as opposed to 91 octane. Just my experience.

Low grade gas and your Muscle Car would sound like a diesel going down the road. We run 87 in all our scoots and never had a problem. Up to 5,000 miles on one Sunny...running 87..
