Yup, that safety glass is designed to shatter into small, less jagged bits whereas standard or tempered glass will split into long dagger sharp shards. Structurally, it is under a bit of tension so any crack that allows displacement sends the whole matrix into a cascade of stress relieving cracks. It all happens so rapidly it literally throws itself to pieces, thus the explosive like disintegration. The back and side windows are like that. The front window is tempered glass so that it won't disintegrate with a projectile strike (rock or other airborne debris strike) It takes more to make the front glass break and it is held in place by a layer of plastic sandwiched in between a couple layers of glass to stop large glass shards from flying around. Small sharp bits can still break away, but may only be likely to cause superficial cuts to flesh. Unless you bang right up against it then it could scratch you pretty badly like some angry cat with a zillion little razor sharp claws.
By virtue of a scientific/engineering description (sort of) and mentioning MATRIX cool sci-fi stuff and an angry cat, I'll just claim my virtual gift as a ride in a MonoTracer motorcycle.(google that!!) It's a spaceship on 2 wheels!!

The Carbon Fiber Electric MonoTracer is said to be capable of cutting an Escalade or Suburban in half.
The Glass/Plastic Sandwich that we now know as a windshield on a car or truck did not have a very good start. Look up Glass Necklace but beware it is not for the squeamish.

howdy, interesting---- as to what broke the window, I couldn't guess but why it came forward a theory might be that at the speed you were going the air pressure is actually pushing forward on the window after curling around the roof . so the "rock" could even have been inside but the air pressure pushed the glass forward---
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken
