Went riding with the wife on some dirt roads in Bellville, TX. We thought it would improve our scoot handling skills on gravel and other sketchy surfaces. Bellville is probably 100 miles from the coast, but the dirt roads were surprisingly sandy. I have ridden motorcycles on sand a lot in my younger days, but it felt very different on a scooter, with the little 10 inch wheels. Its beyond me how those guys were able to finish the Dakar Rally on Vespas. You really have to keep the power on to keep from sinking into the ruts. Steering is best accomplished with body weight distribution, kind of like kayaking or sledding. We did fine, with no spills and enjoyed the scenery.
