Many of the coils read ignition pulses or an electic field. Sometimes reving the engine a few times will up the ignition output enough to trigger them. Being in the center of the lane and not over running the stop line can help too.
On the magnets they only work for the metal detector type. An old magnet from a discarded hard drive hung under your bike from the center stand would be a way to test on the cheap if this would be a valid option in your area.
My fuel injected Aprilia seems to trigger more than my Lance did however it has a much higher capacity stator and creates a bigger ignition pulse.
The newer overhead motion detection sensors have not been a problem.
The law here is to wait 2 cycles of the light and then proceed with caution if it does not turn green for the left hand turn.

Hi long time and very (used to be) frustrated rider,,i carry a snap-on telescopic magnet in my pocket,,,,we have a few very long and sometimes never change lites in my town,,,well no more! i pull out the magnet pull it out to length swipe it over the cut where they bury the wire in the road and that is that and in a flash too,,sometimes it changes so quick i have a hard time getting it back in my pocket in time as the lite changes
