I never watched much Dragnet. But I loved Hogan's Heroes. And Schultzie was one of my faves on the show. I'm not sure he's more macho, but he's more liked in my book.

Well I like to think that Colonel Klink had a certain Prussian aristocratic bearing.

Aw shucks...
I'm a BIG fan of both Jack Webb and John Banner... But while Banner played some cool, macho roles in movies and on TV, Sergeant Schultz wasn't one of them. He actually made you want to hug a sweet, chubby, cuddly Nazi... EEEEEWWWWWWWWWWW! My Jewish pals, feel free to cover your eyes!
Jack Webb was pretty macho in real life. Decidedly a "cop-wannabe" but absolutely genuine. Word is that the police fraternity really appreciated what he did for their image, and they were anxious to cooperate. As corny as those old shows were, Jack kept it as real as the networks would allow in those innocent, naïve days. It's fun to think what he could do today, if he was still with us, producing "Dragnet 2014". With today's commonly seen/heard foul language, slow-motion bullet-impacts and gut-spilling knife-thrusts preceding brutal rape and torture... Golly gee! Talk about MACHO!
In all honesty though, I still love watching the old-school Dragnet shows... Especially the EARLY black and white ones with Ben Alexander as "Frank Smith" before Henry Morgan became Sgt. Friday's sidekick, "Bill Gannon". I saw one not long ago on "METV" where Joe bought lunch for himself and Gannon... 2 burgers and 2 cups of coffee. The bill was FIFTY CENTS! Friday gave the waitress 3 quarters, generously providing her a 50% tip of a quarter!
Now THAT was MACHO... and only cost twenty-five cents to pull off!
Leo (about as macho today as Sgt. Schultz... and wishing prices were like that today) in Texas
