I was wondering what the difference in a computer verses a ipad?. So I ordered one from Amazon for $50 new from China, $10 for accident protection, and $10 for a tablet case with keyboard. Well instead of programs it has apps. Apps don't require as much memory. On my front page it has a weather app, a worldwide internet, calculator app, Wi-Fi settins app, settings app, downloads app, my pad app, and a box to next page. The internet app at It is the ride, and most anything a computer has. The next page I put 3D bowling, Amazon, Book Reader, Camera, Clock, Facebook, Gmail, Google search, Market( place to get new apps), Manga comics, TV.com, Watch movies for free, Youtube, News,.. Had Netflix but it took up to much memory. But in reality, I enjoy it a lot. It is cheap but offers a lot for the buck. Little and personal. Wife can warch tv as I watch Youtube and listen with earphones on. I wrote stuff on facebook to friends, ordered from Amazon, 3D bowling hi score 225 average 135. Market has a lot of free apps- all my apps are free apps except Netflix. Does anyone else have a ipad? What are your thoughts?

My friend gave me his old iPad. I bought an app to display sheet music, scanned over 100 songs, and loaded them into the app. Now I have one sweet iPad and a Pageflip Cicada (step on the pedal, turns the page) instead of 4-8 pages of music to fight.
Sometimes technology really does make life easier.
To answer your question, the main diff is an iPad is not a stand-alone item. It is designed to complement a computer, not replace it.

SylvreKat - I never thought of scanning sheet music. I play the trombone and ukulele and have TONS of sheet music that is often not where it is supposed to be when I want it. What a great idea. Thanks for posting.

The app I got is forScore. Don't remember the price but didn't seem horribly costly. It not only displays music, it lets you add comments, create playlists, and best of all you can mark repeats and DS and codas so you tap the screen on your mark and it automatically jumps to where you set it. ie tap at the sign and it jumps two pages straight to the coda.
Add the Cicada (or Pageflip's newer model the Firefly, which isn't out 'til Feb) and your hands rarely need to leave your instrument!
However, I do recommend Otterbox-ing the iPad. Esp if you play outdoors. I also got Otterbox's carrying thing and use it to literally strap my iPad onto a stand. So if the stand should happen to fall, my iPad is very unlikely to go flying.
Btb, Mike, I sort of dabble on the uke. Except I think I've taught myself more of a classical guitar style--I do arpeggios rather than strummy-strum.

I have an IPad that has been collecting dust for a long time. I felt it was pretty useless for anything other than games. No USB port, no card reader. If you want to get anything into it you have to email your self the file or sync up with your computer.
It is OK for getting your email surfing the web at a wifi spot or you can buy a cell service subscription if you have one with 3g or 4g. I have seen people use it as a camera, older models anyway have a low resolution camera. If you like hi quality photos, don't use one for that.
Personally I'd use my phone for most anything I would do on an IPad. If you are a IPhone person you would probably like it, seems once you become a I addict you go for any of the I products.
All that negative said, the price you got that for is incredible and would make it totally worth getting.

Doug, you can buy a pair of plug-ins, one for USB and one for SD cards. I just got it at Best Buy. Except I'm going to try my old camera adaptor first to see if it'll work.
I was in the running for a Samsung. My friend said it's not comparable. Icons aren't really set up for touch yet so they don't always respond. I forget now, there were a couple of things he said wasn't as good. He uses his couple to control some of his machines. But he uses his iPad for pretty much everything else.
He's the one that glommed me onto the adaptors.

needing to use adapters is pretty lame. Poor design if you ask me. I have never had a computer made by anybody hat did not have usb slots, didn't apple think people would need at leas one? They are full of arrogance.

I don't know about arrogance. But I really haven't needed a usb port yet. I got the adaptor 'cause I think it'll be easier than transferring photos onto my laptop then onto my iPad. But now rethinking things, I'm not sure I even really need the adaptors. I've been good so far without them. Hm. Now I'm considering returning them. Or seeing if my friend would want them for her iPad--she takes hundreds of horse racing photos that she then puts onto her iPad. Hm. Besides, when I looked over the Samsung at BestBuy, it doesn't have a real usb port either. It has some tiny little port. So you'd still need an adaptor. Ditto the SD slot--it's not the full size (such as what cameras use), it's the mini or micro or whatever super-tiny SD size. Didn't they think people would want to just plug in their regular-sized usb or camera card? >'Kat

I have not actually looked at any of the other tablets. I am assuming the Surface has a regular USB, just because it seems to be a bridge type of tablet/laptop device. Don't want one of those either. I was hoping to use my ipad to transfer photos from my camera SD card and it upset me to have to email them to it. I just am sticking with a laptop, netbook or PC for my needs other than checking email and web pages.
You have a system for what you need and that is great.

You have a system for what you need and that is great. Which is displaying piano sheet music so I no longer have a dozen pages to mess with. Everything else is just icing. Or else fluff. Although grabbing it when I'm upstairs to check something on the 'net real quick sure is convenient, vs going downstairs and getting on the LapMac. >'Kat

Love my ipad. iCloud does all my picks right to my desktop or for other files drop box. I can edit excel and word on the fly. And be on my scooter form
