Just got a laptop to replace my old one. It has windows 8. I heard a lot of hate for 8, but it's not too bad so far. Only thing that gets annoying, at least with my laptop, is the touchpad because basically the whole border of it involves some sort of touch action that is easy to do accidentally---opening sidebars, apps... I like the whole concept of it, though. Still plan on getting a pretty decent desktop in the future.

Hated the layout of metro. Windows did so much effort into the Metro desktop, making it the face of Windows 8, but everyone hated it! That's why they included a regular Windows desktop layout too. It seems to have calmed some users, but the majority of people I know aren't happy with any of the 'improvements' windows has done since Windows 98Se. In all honesty, if Windows would have a Win98Se update Service pack, that would make programs and browsing compatible, I would go back to 98! Windows 98 was rock solid in the last 6 months when it came out; being replaced by buggy XP, which became rocksolid the year Vista came out, which never was rock solid, and Windows 7, which still is seen as a bloated operating system.
XP is still good for netbooks; but should 98 have been ran on a netbook, guarantee you'd have 1-3hours of battery life extra, and bootup times within 30 seconds! New isn't always better. Chevrolet figured that out in the hard way in the 80's when their Corvettes and other muscle cars stopped selling with the hike in gas prices. Intel figured that out in the 2000's when their processors where overheating, and people where actually asking for less power hungry machines. MS only figured that out after Vista, the biggest hog in the century!
I'm hoping windows 9 will be small, and efficient again!

I damaged the hard drive in my laptop at the beginning of the year.So I opted to buy a new one. It had windows8. I hated it, so I returned it and had a new hard drive put into the other one formatted with windows 7.Even though with 8 you can switch to a classic desktop theme, I still don't want it. Many people i've spoken to (including my computer repair guy) dislike windows 8. Why can't they leave well enough alone?Apps for this- Aps for that... Pretty soon, an app to blow your nose. RIDICULOUS!On another note, I can't stand smart phones either.Too much technology just makes people more stupid, fat and lazy.

Well, although I agree with a lot you say, I think technology should be used to expand your existing borders, rather than make lazy. For instance, a GPS, One can use it to find roads in area's one is not familiar. But one can also use it to go from home to the job every day, eventhough one knows the road very well.
A GPS could help when uncertain which roads to take, but a smart man will try to do without GPS, unless he is short on time, and lost his way further than he thought.

On another note, I can't stand smart phones either.Too much technology just makes people more stupid, fat and lazy. I'll bite. Too much technology makes some people efficient and lean. It all depends on you. Blaming technology for fat lazy people is ridiculous. Fat lazy people are fat because they are lazy and their lazy because the have been allowed to be or have chosen to be. I carry a smart phone and compete in Century bike races. Last one I was at I didn't see any fat or lazy people competing. I did see a lot of smart phones...

While I agree with you that it should be a tool to enhance knowledge and expand horizons, It has become somewhat of a crutch for a lot of people. Also children of today spent way too much time gaming on the computers.and texting and whatever else they do that a great portion of the population is overweight and out of shape.I see too many employees on phones all day when they should be at their jobs. what im saying is that its ok for what it's meant to be, but too many are dependent on their smartphones and technology. Try to take a younger person's phone away for a week, and (if you can) let me know the results. I think its gotten out of hand.If you disagree, so be it.

I have seen a few Bright young people with great capabilities become so dependent on the smartphone , that they "forgot about the simple tasks- math, memory and so on. If you don't use it, you lose it. And having a device do so many things for you DOES make people lazy.

Does or can? Should we get rid of that destructive technology we call a pen and paper? People might begin to rely on note taking and never use their memory. It's ridiculous to say just having it will destroy your mental faculties. You have a computer obviously, perhaps you should destroy it because, some people are consumed by online gaming or porn. Technology isn't of itself destructive. The way people use it might be. If it's all bad I suggest you go live in a cave and gather berries but be sure to not use a basket or a knife or clothing cause technology is destructive. Absolutes like yours are always wrong...

If it's all bad I suggest you go live in a cave and gather berries but be sure to not use a basket or a knife or clothing cause technology is destructive. Absolutes like yours are always wrong... I graduated with a degree in electronics in 1978, before the internet. I walked away from that field because i said back then that it would eventually destroy civilization. It wasnt until the 's before I got a computer. I have witnessed society and morals go downhill since. Technology is fine for those of us who know how to live without it. Many highway deaths are due to cellphones and texting, as well as millions of dollars in lost production. Identity theft ... and youre right, It is the people ,and how they use it that is the issue. But tell me with a straight face that these violent video games do not de sensitize and de humanize the addictid players contributing to violent crimes. Technology isnt to blame, but it does facilitate these things If you can't see that, maybe you are in the cave Also, When I went to my engineering classes, we werent allowed calculators. We had to use slide rules. I challenge any college student today to use a slide rule. Yes Technology has actually made people dumber.Simple things and common sense are becomming less and less evident in people

I'm growing tired of people blaming things for the actions of people. The moral degradation of society is caused by people not things. If there was no market for bad things companies wouldn't produce them. People blame everything but themselves for their fat, violent, worthless children. I have four kids one has a smart phone. When I felt his use was destructive I took it for a week. He is still alive and uses it more responsibly now. He's a straight A student with a job and college credit as a junior in high school. Is he an anomaly or is it something we did? Society is the way it is because individuals have chosen to move away from what kept us moral in the past. Technology isn't responsible ideas that are embraced to the detriment of the embracers are the problem. Until people take responsibility for their actions and the raising of their children things will only get worse. The idea that it is someone elses fault allows people to do nothing but blame others. I fear for us as a country, we happily buy the "poor me look what they did to me" garbage perpetuated by the very people instrumental in selling the stuff we are blaming for our own failings (television). Wake up America things stink because of the choices we made/make. It's no ones fault but our own. Violent video games only harm children whose parents buy the games for them and ditto for the rest. It's our fault period.

Things turned out well for you (and me thank God ) because we were responsible parents.(a dying breed).Too many individuals and companies are now targeting young people who may not yet have good enough judgement to steer clear of with apps and games, and moneymaking schemes. Responsible adults arent always around to monitor these things. How many sexual predators have been able to carry out their sick fantasies because technology facilitated it? I am by no means saying that Technology is solely to blame, but it is getting a little bit much. Kind of overwhelming, and it is definitely having a detrimental effect on civilized people, and enables normal and not so normal people to do things they may not be able or even think of without it. I agree, It is the greatest tool ever,at the same time, it is becomming the dumbing down of society. Too many tech addicts can be just as bad as too many drug addicts.

The more neurons you use to storing useless data like calculating, math, memorizing road maps, etc.. the less you have left for the really important things of life, like having sex, and riding scooters!

I agree, I saw a 5 yr old riding in the grocery cart his mother was pushing and he was talking to his mom on his own smart phone telling her what kind of candy he wanted her to buy for him (mind you, she was only 4 feet away from him) and she was actually answering him on her smart phone. When I asked her about it, she told me that she got him his own smart phone because he needed to know how to communicate. I could not believe what I was witnessing..
