I keep meaning to change my gear oil, and I looked at my log book while I changed my oil today and saw it was last changed 6000 miles ago!!!!!!!!!
I drained it and what came out was worse than the stuff I got on delivery - sort of a brownish-greenish shimmering liquid that really smelled awful. It was riding ok before the change so I only hope I didn't do too much damage. I believe the correct change interval is every two years or three thousand miles. From now on its every other oil change that I'll do it. Hopefully I dodged a bullet here.

Mike , what weight gear oil . Gear oil stinks in general . One of the books for the Chinese scooters I got stated 10w40 for gear oil . I think it was a misprint at the time I didn't know better . I had changed that oil several times and it still stinks of gear oil .

Yeah, a good weight gear oil is stinky .Even when brand new. I'm sure you will be ok. just dirty. I'll bet it still had plenty of lubricating properties left in it

I used Lucas gear oil, which I think is 80w- , based on all the old pdi threads on the old scootdawg site. There were always people quoting the manuals which often called for 10w40, and the experienced opinion was to go with Lucas.

I plan on changing the oil every 500-600 miles after break in when I get my moped.

I think the Lucas additive saved your gears.

10w40 and a 75 gear oil are not really all that different. As long as there is oil in there I don't think it will matter much it's not like you're pulling a trailer...

I never smelled gear oil. I change it in the beginning, and after 3k miles and it just looks like new (yellowish), with some particles of metal flakes in. Maybe it smells because your gearbox is leaking, and water enters in it. When water enters in the gear oil, it gets captured by the additives, and starts rotting.
I would recommend you to change gear oil more often if you notice that happening

Gear oil has a VERY distinctive smell to it compared to motor oil. I never smelled gear oil.
