if it was knocking even with the original i would say you have some sort of valve timing issue. maybe the timing chain is back/forward a tooth. make sure you are at tdc and the sprocket is properly centered with the two small holes aligned with the head and the larger hole centered at the top. may as well check and adjust the valves while you're at it, cause it never hurts

OK progress - somewhat.
Mine is a California scoot which means it is even more lean that normal for these already too-lean machines. So that advice to enrichen made sense. I did that and it made a big difference, but didn't entirely cure the knock.
So I'm wondering, might I still need more fuel, by jetting up? Considering again this is a California lean carb, maybe it has a small jet in it?
Gotta keep at this and get rid of that knock!
