A lot of "performance" cdi's have the timing advanced throughout the rev range. Combustion is combustion but the when makes a difference.

Well folks, it looks like I get to declare at least a provisional victory. ((* (we'll see how the gas mileage plays out over time) The clouds parted long enough for me to make a trip on a mix of 25, 35, and 45 MPH speed limit roads up to the local 'World of Walls'. Apparently this scoot just doesn't like to go anywhere near WOT until almost 50 MPH. It's still doing the 'rev to 6, drop and hang at 5' thing if I go straight to WOT, but on the 45 MPH road I *might* have fudged the limit just a bit (insert innocent look here) and got the Chinometer up to nigh 55 at roughly 7K RPM. That's as fast as I dared go given my inexperience, unfamiliarity with the scoot, and the fact that I was rapidly approaching the local cop-shop. I have to say though that I like the way the bike runs with the Blue CDI box over the factory unit, so I'll be swapping that back on. Thank you for all your help, and a special thanks to those who suggested that I go out and flog the little beastie to see if there really *was* an issue or not. ;o Of course... now I'm pondering a lighter set of variator weights/1500RPM clutch-spring to improve the low speed takeoff. Since there really aren't any streets around here faster than 45MPH I cant see justifying a taller variator set, no mater how much the 'Tim Allen grunt-grunt gene' in me wants it. Taller final drive gears for better cruising gas mileage on the other hand.... o))

if you go heavier spring keep heavy weights. i would just change the weights down one size and i would do sliders much better than rollers. the yellow spring on a 150 s not so great i tried it and took it rt back out it killed my top end. now on a stock 50cc they work great. just my 2 cent

It is in essence, because my scooter also doesn't get past 6k RPMs, even on a downgrade, thus keeping my top speed at 43mph. It still drops major RPMs when the throttle is released. I'm gonna try swapping the 9s out for the 7s (for a 7/5g combo) and see what happens... Whew, THOSE rollers sound EXTREMELY light for a 150cc. My scoot is a 6-year-old Xingyue 150 and I've run 12 and 13 gram rollers, finding the 13's too heavy (55 mph top speed, but poor acceleration) and 12's too light (45 mph top speed @ near 10K rpm!). My speedo AND tach ARE accurate. I'm running a mix of 12 and 13 now, and that's the best setup yet, with 52 mph top speed and good acceleration/climbing. I weigh 235, so the 150 is pulling a load... A pound lettuce eater/fashion-model could probably get 60+ from it... LOL! Your initial problem of that hollow sound toward top speed, but OK running "on the stand" is ALL too familiar to me. I got one of those scoots that did that NEW, right from "out of the box". It absolutely will NOT run right past 40-45 with the stock air-filter setup. A full year of major irritation including a new carb later, and I FINALLY tried running/tuning with the BARE CARB with NOTHING attached to the carb-mouth. BINGO!!! Ran well from idle to WOT.As a test, I put the stock "tuba" style air intake back on, and the hollow petering out was right back. I removed the paper filter, no improvement. I removed EVERYTHING but the convoluted tube, no improvement. Remove the tube, runs fine! I put on a UNI-sock filter, and it ran great. The motor-mount interferes with it some, so I added a short rubber-hose extension to put the UNI behind the mount. The hollow petering out was right back. I then tried running with ONLY a short extension on the carb-mouth and NO filter. Same TERRIBLE RUNNING was right back. Remove the extension, and it runs fine again. Put the UNI on with NO extension, and it runs fine again. I am 50-years motorcycle savvy, and this scooter "hollow-petering-out" at speed is something I truly cannot understand. But my scoot will NOT tolerate ANYTHING attached to the carb-mouth EXCEPT a free-flowing UNI filter. Try test-riding yours with NOTHING on the carb... NO filter, and NO extension, tube, or anything. It's a long shot, but you may have a similar problem to mine. If so, a "sock" filter might be the answer. With the sock, I still had to re-jet and adjust the needle for quicker raising but it's now run well for five years. The sock filter takes a beating from the engine mount, but I've only had to replace it once from abrasion-damage. I can live with that. Some say I'm nuts, but trust me, mine will not run to full rpm (except on the stand) with ANYTHING whatsoever on the mouth of the carb, EXCEPT the UNI filter. Do try running with NO filter OR extension on the carb. (Don't run it much without a filter though...) If that does NOT help, at least you'll know for sure it's something else. If it DOES help, you'll save the misery of a full riding season trying to figure it out like I did... LOL! This air-filter phenomenon is not common. MOST scoots seem to run OK with the stock, or any aftermarket filter. HOWEVER... Maybe one in 20 scoots exhibit the same problem I had. Could be yours is one. Best wishes, and welcome to the site!Leo in Texas PS: I've also read of numerous gripes about the "blue" CDI's. I just put one in mine, so I'm getting a backup "orange" one post-haste. ALSO... the CDI's are definitely NOT waterproof!!! I had a "red" one for 4 years and it was great until I hit it with the spray-wash while cleaning the scoot after years of dirt. Had to push it 3 miles home!
Keep ALL the electrics dry on these... Cars, they ain't... LOL!PPS: Once you have it running right, the upgrades that gave me the best improvements over stock were the no-limit CDI, Bando coil, iridium plug AND a Prodigy variator. The CDI, coil and plug EACH increased idle rpm slightly (had to adjust down a little) and each upgrade made slight improvements in throttle-response and overall performance. 5-years of riding have proven these to be good upgrades.
