Ok, the smilie for a smilie face below: :) actually gives this smilie: which should be a smilie inserted when typing 'LOL' not :) The second icon, is this waving icon you can get by winking ;-) (without the nose). Is also incorrect. It should be a winking icon. The third icon Thumbs up icon should be when you type (y) in Skype or Facebook. When typing :-D (without the nose), you should get something like this: ;D Following make sense: could be gotten when typing o.o could be gotten by typing 8) but makes sense could also be gotten by typing (rolleyes) or something of the kind is a blushing icon, makes less sense should be a quiet/'me shut up'-icon instead, since following code is used: :-X A You-shut-up icon could be this :-# makes little sense. It should be :-? Anyway, so much of this is already standardized, and this forum is not within these standards. When in doubt get Facebook, Skype, or another messenger, and see what symbols/code they use for each icon...

First of all the computer icon codes are not standardized and are basically divided into two groups Western and Eastern; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticonsThen there are different ones for lots of groups, MSN, Yahoo, and yes Facebook. See how many different ones are listed alone for just a smiley or happy face in the first line of codes? Secondly since you are not aware of how Proboards does there layout in the forum script and/or codes you would not be aware of what I had to do to change the standard default smiley icons here to make them work. Long story short I had to cheat to simply put in the extra icons in the quick reply section and the standard reply section along with the extra smiley section that I added. In the default mode Proboards uses the western style of icons but to change them to the moving GIF's that I thought would be more favorable and fun I had to change the coding in the default section add extra javascript codes and then link them to a image host which I use photobucket and picture push. Doug and I have a godaddy hosting server and I'm looking at seeing if I can host my images there because it's something already paid for. Facebook has bought Photobucket and Tinypic and they give you a mere 2g of so called free upload space, then the rug gets pulled out from under you and you have to pay then monthly/yearly fees to keep your images on or they disappear. I hate Facebook and anything associated with them. So now you know why the icon symbols/codes are different, besides you don't have to type them, just click on the image and they will automatically insert no matter what the code is and that's all that should matter. It's not about the animation gifs, they're cool. But it's about the meaning of the symbols, that is pretty much standardized. Any mail server (yahoo, gmail, hotmail, AOL), facebook, any instant messenger like AIM, Skype, Trillian, Pidginm Digsbyand, the former MSN Messenger , and almost any chatroom online, would use a standarized form of icons, meaning ; ) is a wink, not a 'hi' icon. : D is a smilie not a Thumbs up (which is (y) in most cases).
Although there is no icon standard in a sense that the images are the same, the conversion of text based smilies to graphic icons is always the same, meaning a ; ) text based smilie should mean, and match a winky icon. That's what I'm trying to say...

Different forums, sites, etc. use different icons. But again as I stated to change the default smiles I had to change the text codes. If one wants to use more than one happy face smiley then you use a different text code among the many available. When you put your curser over the second smiley here in the regular reply section it comes up as "wink" yet it is the smiley waving it's hand. I cannot change that in the Proboards forum code, it is not allowed by them and I don't have access to their layout, however I can change the image that is associated with "wink" to whatever I want but not the text code associated with "wink." I could find and put a "wink" gif in that slot but at this point since we will soon go to the new V5 software I'm not going to spend the time to change them. I've spent hours/days working on this and with the new software I'll have more options including matching the text code better. Members will also have a new personal smiley section available to them which will allow you to store 25 of your own favorite smilies and it will be done on a basis of you linking to a url and not associated with text code.
