Hello friendly scooter wizards!
I'm new to the forum, but for about a month I have been reading all of the information here which has just been so incredibly useful.
When I first got my scooter, I wanted to get the oil changed at the local shop. They told me $27.
, so I searched for the how-to on the internet and landed at this site. Haven't looked back since.
Anyways I bought my 2008 United Motors GP1-r about a month ago. It is a 150cc, and it only had 400 miles on it when I got it. ( BTW I paid $550 for it. Was that a good price?? ) I love it. I drive to the next town over every morning, about a 60 mile journey round-trip. It is one of the flattest, straightest roads you'll ever see. Speed limit of 55 so I scoot along as fast as my scooter can. (It tells me I'm going more than 80, so I know the speedometer has issues)
At first, before it really warmed up, my scooter would die every time I came to a stop, with the problem going away once I warmed it up.
Adjusting the A/F screw and the idle screw didn't really have any effect.
For 2 or 3 days the UM gave me a lot of trouble starting, until it just wouldn't start. To get the scoot home from where it broke down, I had to bypass the fuel valve and run the gas straight to the carb ( with an on/off knob, of course) AND manually choke the carb by putting my hand over the intake vent .
Diagnosing the problem, at first I thought it might be the fuel valve, so I ordered a new one which should be here Tuesday. But my mind kept nagging me so I tinkered some more...
I decided to go ahead and replace the spark plug, change out all the fuel line, and clean the fuel valve. Since the bike is 5 or 6 years old with only 400 miles, I decided it had to have sat for a while. The spark plug had no gap at all.
Ultimately this is my problem....
I have to spray starter fluid in it to get it to start. Once I spray, it starts right up. If the scooter dies before it warms up, I have to spray more starter fluid. It seems like it dies if I either turn it off or come to a stop without gassing it. If I ride until it warms up, the scooter will start right up when turned off. Until it cools off.
I have cleaned the carb, replaced the spark plug, fuel lines, fuel filter, cleaned the fuel valve with a new one coming TUEsday which I am going to replace. I cleaned the air filter by knocking all of the dust/debris out. I put sea foam in my tank, and checked my battery.
