I bought a 1,000 dollar car (cavalier) wiith 130,000. The women had her husband sign the title when it was in her name. They took off never answered their phone bought the car at a friends house resign a new paper to verify it. I had to forge the signature but the DMV let it go because I told them and they verified by getting a hold of the owner later. No problems. I just got back from a 1500 mile trip to Nevada and 1500 miles back to Wisconsin 3000 mile trip in the car. Keep in mind the steering fluid I replaced, trans filter and liquid, oil, air filter and that was it.

I know my mech could claim a car after the owner hadn't responded in so long. If you don't mind a salvage title, maybe your dealership can do similar--"abandon" it to them, let them claim it then sign over the salvage title to you.
Good luck!
