I'll grant you the doughboy looks scarier but the GI (Marine?) with the Thompson would definitely give you a case of the heeby-jeebys.
(Besides the Doughboys had Clara Bow)

I've been through Liberty Memorial. I've seen what those men endured, down in the trenches. I can't imagine just how awful it was in reality, but the replica and my imagination were bad enough. It looked horrible.
Doughboy, hands down.
Not that our WW II men weren't macho as well. But they were at least safe from those trenches and gas warfare.
You know though, from what vet's have said, each war is chock-full of horrors all its own. I wish no person would ever need to face the nastiness that man can inflict onto fellow man. And that we all can sit here figuring out the machoiness of astronauts and other pioneers instead.

My Grandpa fought in Europe during WWII and he was the toughest man that ever lived so my vote is clear.
