In a few hours, I will be joining about 80 other musicians (from high school to YEARS OLD!!) in the Olathe Civic Band to play for Olathe's Memorial Day ceremony. I consider it an honour to be a part of this. They remind everyone what our vets did in the past to protect all of us, and what they're doing now to continue protecting folks. You vets and actives are all very very special. You'll be in my thoughts today as we play, and as the Am Legion's ceremony proceeds. Thank you all for giving of yourself to keep me safe. >'Kat

I would like to take a minute to thank all the members of this Forum for thinking of the Veterans on this day. It took me 67 years before someone came up to me and thanked me for my service, and that was one of the proudest moments of my life! When you join the service in war time, your are not thinking about gratitude ,but just getting the job done as fast as possible . i went in as a boy and came out as a man ,and am proud of the opportunity to have the chance to learn the lessons that have helped me throughout the years . Thank you all the the good thoughts !! Crawdad Pte Canadian Army 1944 .

My Mom's dad served in the German trenches for WW I. Immigrated here to avoid the next war.
My Dad's dad served in the Army Air Corps for WW I. My Dad's brother served in the Air Force in New Mexico, I think right before Korea. My Dad served in the Air Force as a spook, between Korea and Vietnam--he was part of a team that watched the Communists' radar sweeps to warn our planes where not to fly.
Me, I offered to fly an F-15, but I was too early (women weren't allowed to fly combat planes, just helicopters), too wrong a major (needed engineering or similar--Fine Arts and teaching didn't quite cut it), and too strong of glasses. Sigh.
So you can understand why I think "Off They Go" is just about the best military theme song out there. No offense to you in the other branches.
