Most I'll pay for a used generic 150 cc scooter is $500 in really good condition $200 if it looks beat on in any way. My previous bike a GY6 150 was a Lance Vintage which I got used for $400 with 3,000 miles on it. Considering the repairs of failed items that I did over the year I had it I paid way too much for it. 2 heads, 2 belts, variator, clutch, muffler, gear case bearings, starter, rear fender fell off, ignition pickup, cdi, ignition coil. It became obvious that a GY6 150 was not a good match for the semitropical area I live in and its 45+ mph roads carrying around my 6' tall size 48 250lbs around (only have a 36" waist so not morbidly obese). I was not WOT most of the time either and changed the engine oil and gear lube monthly or every 1,000 miles whichever came first along with adjusting the valves (the intake would open up and the exhaust would close up so they needed it).
At 8,500 miles when I replaced all the CVT components and rebuilt the gear box I traded it in on an Aprilia 250 for $2,499 plus the $500 trade in they gave me on the Lance and have had 16,000 trouble free miles so far at speeds ranging from in town to cross state touring on the interstate. It has run reliably at sustained speeds well over 70 mph for hours on end. Oil/gear lube changes are at 6,200 mile intervals and valve checks are at every 12,000 miles.
An air cooled GY6 is not a good match for WOT running except for that brief moment to pickup speed for the next hill or to excellerate up to 45 mph with the occasional foray to 55/60 mph. Past that you are looking at reduced reliability along with a shorter overall engine life.

I got a 150 for the price and riding. On commute to work I go 22 miles one way and 4 miles of that was at 55mph, the rest 45mph or 35.
Plus I didn't have a M/C license til I got the scooter and practiced at the dmv course prior to doing the road test.
Now that I've had enough riding experience I'd be comfortable with a 250cc motorcycle. But I think I'm going to get my scooter back to life with a new engine and go from there.
And yes, before anybody comments.....I have been to the motorcycle foundation course I learned the clutch control, shifting gears, emergency and lifesaving maneuvers ect on a 250cc motorcycle.
