George Burns was God.
Can't get more macho than that.

Jack Benny, because he could play a musical instrument. Burns played a cigar.

Can't do this one, I like them both equally . I've gotta agree... I'm SO old I remember watching both these guys live on early B&W TV and in movies in the theater... Both SO entertaining without resorting to potty-mouth humor! And don't forget Jack's straight-man "Rochester" and George's straight-gal, wife "Gracie"... They really "made the shows"... Say goodnight, Gracie... "OK, goodnight Gracie"... LOL!

Leo, if the one-man show of George Burns is ever near you, go! You'll thoroughly enjoy it. Mom usually disliked non-musicals but really liked it. So did I, and I haven't encountered a lot of his routines.

Leo, if the one-man show of George Burns is ever near you, go! You'll thoroughly enjoy it. Mom usually disliked non-musicals but really liked it. So did I, and I haven't encountered a lot of his routines. I'll have to watch for it. I do love the clean humor of the greats... George Burns, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Jackie Gleason... Red Skelton, Milton Berle and many others. Some of those greats were real patriots too... Like John Wayne, they helped keep America together during tough times. My Dad saw Bob Hope live in the Solomon Islands... He was at the "front of the front lines" and Hope wasn't supposed to go to places THAT full of active combat.Of course, Bob Hope wanted to entertain the guys who had it the worst, and was absolutely fearless. My Dad recalled how in the middle of his performance, a Japanese sniper shot at him, the bullet going through his hat! My dad and most of the other soldiers ducked for cover while a BAR man eliminated the sniper... Hope never even flinched... Just kept on making jokes while he put his finger through the bullet-hole in his fatigue cap. Then he laughed and mused: "If THAT is the BEST these jerks can shoot, it's gonna be a mighty short war!"Id love to see how one of today's left-wing, foul-mouthed comics would handle a similar situation... Oh wait... I forgot... None of them would consider supporting our troops... NOPE! Bob autographed that bullet-holed cap and gave it to one of the troops. What a souvenir!!!

What a great story from your dad, UncaLeo!
You're right, the "oldies" really did have it over the "younguns". Even the old game shows were better and funnier than their current remakes. Match Game for example--I loved watching it. I was just old enough to know they were hinting at naughty things, but too young to get what those naughty things were. But the new version, they just out and say it (and get bleeped half the time). Everyone has to be naughty. Family Feud--my gosh, they come up with sex or body parts for answers to even the most non-sexy/body part questions. "What's the best breed of dog?" "Gosh, I'm gonna hafta say, his 'woo-woo'." Sigh.
