Just a little history on the bikes. I traded a Goldwing for the Twin Star. The Goldwing was not running and beyond my ability to get it back on the road, so, it was a good trade for a running Twin Star. ( I did not want to be that guy who has a bike in the garage that he has been meaning to fix for the past so many years.) The Twin Star is a great little bike with a 6volt electric system and point ignition, riders of classic shifty Vespas would love this bike. The V Star is a 650cc bike that I bought mostly because I came into a modest amount of money that was almost exactly what the bike cost, and, I am curious about larger bikes. So, which bike was I riding when I hit a car at 40mph . . . drum roll please. . . It was the V Star. About a month ago the weather was starting to get warm enough that I could start commuting by motorcycle again. I had just got the V Star this spring and had not had that much time to ride it just yet, so, I decided to ride it. I got about three blocks from home and had to pull off to the side of the road in a parking lot since I forgot to open the fuel valve, I opened it, and proceded on my way. I only got about another block or two when a car pulled out in front of me. I was going about 40mph and the only thing that I could do was to grab the clutch and apply the brakes. I do not think that the brakes were fully applied before I hit the car, and I could see the side of the car cave in from the impact of my front tire. The next thing I rember is my head bouncing arround in my helmet as I bounced down the road, and realizing nothing was broken and I was not dead. Some nice people came to help me, the driver of the car fled. Needless to say I survived the crash, and was actually doing yard work the day afer the crash. However, the crash did lave a mark. If you know the purpleish bruse that forms when someone gets a really, really, really black eye. Well, my entire but was that color, and it was that color for about three weeks before starting to turn varrious shades of brown, grey, and green indicating healing. After about four weeks I still have some fadded brown brusing. I also have some persistent knots that match parts of my bike. Apparently what happened is that when my bike hit the car the bike rotated around the front axel causing the back of the bike and me to flipp upward, and away from striking the car. There is a dent in the gas tank that matches the knot on my left pelvis often refered in the bicycleing world as the sit bone. There is also an arch of knotting along my lower back that matches the ridgid part of the back of the seat. All in all, I got away without any serious injuries with a bit of luck, and a bit of good gear. Be careful out there people.

THAT adventure could have easily ended fatally... SO glad it did not!
You may have some aches and pains and stiff-joints later in life from this (I can tell all about that... but it didn't start until after sixty...).
Excellent learning post for all of us! Too bad the driver wasn't caught. You can about bet the farm it was an illegal alien in a stolen car. It's a rough world out there... Keep your eyes open one and all!

Glad you are OK Kevin. Fatal crashes have occurred at 40 mph, but usually to un-helmeted riders. In light of this, you may want to consider a succession plan for More Macho Monday.

After surviving THIS adventure, you might want to do a "more macho" post like... Who's more macho? YOU or EVEL KNIEVEL...

I'm a full proponent of All the Gear All the Time--toes to fingers to head. So I for one thank you kev' for wearing protection.
Too bad nobody chased the guy to at least get his tag info. But at least you weren't hurt too bad. How bad is your bike--can you fix it and resume driving it soon?
>'Kat, agreeing you should be in the next More Macho
