I need help w my lawnmower, thought you guys could help maybe I put the sparkplug against the engine to check for spark and nothing. I'm going to replace the plug and see what happens. What is the next step you would do?? Also, a little water gets in the engine will it be okay? I rinsed it off real quick and forgot to put the plug back in. Not a lot of water but I'm hoping its okay. Thanks guys!  |

Leave the plug out and crank it over a few times to get the water out.
That should not cause any problems, check the coil wire and make sure the wires on the coil are ok. Many times mice get at those and they like colored wires.

Haha,,if no spark,,check the wire make sure its connected to the coil nice and tight,,then make sure all your safety switches/kill switches are good.If that's good I would say you need a new coil.Easy fix.A little water wont hurt it.

cool, I'll try to take off the top part of the engine which is the plastics and inspect the coil wire. This is a relatively new mower so I'm not sure it will be rotted/ eaten wires but I'll check.
I keep this mower outside covered w/ a tarp for the time being. I'm hoping the elements didn't get to it somehow. Shouldn't
Would spraying it off with the hose mess it up?
How about gas that mightve over-poured onto the top of the engine when I was filling it up?

[replyingto=domindart]domindart[/replyingto]Ok,,sometimes the coil is under the flywheel but not usually,,not sure what kind of motor you have there,,but after you take the cover off,,make sure the key on the crankshaft is still where it should be,,sometimes they shear off when you hit a little rock or branch and throw the whole motor out of time,,usually if this happened,,it would kick back and rip the rope out of your hand when you go to start it,,but not always |

Also if there is a gas priminer to get some gas into the intake do that, I know on my snowblower I have to prime it and also full choke so it sucks in some fuel. If not with the plug out put a tespoon of gas down the plug hole.

You could have got water in the plug cap or on the coil and it may have seeped in a little,,let it dry out real good,,and check for spark again.Spilling fuel on the motor wont hurt it unless its running and it finds a spark  |

I'm gonna replace the spark plug and then go from there  It does indeed have a bulb to push for gas, but I was afraid to push on it too much so it doesn't flood |

Is this a riding mower or a push mower? Fwiw coil coil is one of the last things we check when working on a rider, usually it ends up being a safety switch. On a push mower usually the ground wire to kill the motor usually frays, touches a ground and kills spark.

Ok, it should be very simple. First check to make sure you plug boot has good connection with the wire, cut back a little if you need. Next, the coil on outside of flywheel, check that the little wire is not touching ground anywhere. Usually you can unplug it at the coil. If it isn't grounding out anywhere then check the gap between the flywheel and coil, two business cards is good. If you still don't have spark your coil is probably bad.

Check the points.
check if you have spark without the plug hold the wire close to a ground and pull the cord.
if it doesnt have spark pull the flywheel off and check the points if it sat outside even covered it probably got moisture in the points and most times you can clean them up
