For a leak down test you can use a DVM set to mA and insert the leads in series with the positive wire(with the motor OFF),,if you see more than 1 or 2 mA of drain then you have something shorting current to ground slowly...if the battery continues to die and you have no mA of drain,,then the batt is beat.

1 shot of whiskey is all I've had in the last 4 months. I also haven't had a cigarette in 4 months--- that's why I haven't drank anything. Whenever I drink (or when I did drink), I'd smoke waaayyy too many cigarettes. The past 3 years my chest and throat would hurt off and on. I got tired of it--I've been using an e-cig ever since (smoked for about 17 years). Quitting smoking was my #1 priority, so I didn't want to risk smoking again so I didn't take the chance drinking--ANYTHING. Usually I'd smoke about a pack a day (Marlboro Lights). If I drank-- even just a couple beers, I'd smoke a pack-and-a-half to 2 packs of cigs, sometimes more. I'd smoke a pack of cigs between 11pm and 4AM. So after the first week of using the e-cig, my chest and throat has stopped hurting. I've saved almost $700, too. My favorite breweries are Bells and Three Floyds. I went to Three Floyd's brewpub on my birthday 3 years ago. If any of you craft beer lovers have heard of Three Floyds, you'll know what I mean. They have some world class IPA's if that's your thing. Congrats on quitting,, Took me 7 years to quit,,I started at 12 years old and smoked till 29,,now Im 43..I feel so much better and hate the smell of it,,such a dirty habbit! I can drink now and not need a cig but it took years..IPS's are good!

Ok my last 2 cents .what do Harleys and german shepherds have in common ? Ok they both like to ride in the back of pickup trucks ( go to Sturgis and just watch the trailer queens ) and second they both leak alot . Now if you want to see something lay down oil a friend has a 1928 or 29 Indian .bone stock but restored , it has a total loss system , if you look at the bike it has 2 gas caps , but 1 is really a oil cap , the gas tank is really half gas tank and half oil tank , when you start the bike you turn on both the gas and oil peacocks .the oil runs through the engine and right out on the ground, there is no oil pan , pump or anything else .the tree huggers just love him when he rides it , and don't forget to shut off the petcock , or you will gave about a gallon on the ground Yeah a gallon on the ground and the rest in the crank case..lol

If you think its the fuel pump or to rule out the pump go to lowes or home depot and get a manual petcock,,by pass the pump and see how that works,,just make sure your lines run downhill to the carb,,you can even just use a long piece of fuel line and run NO petcock at all just for the test...
For the charging issue put a DVM on the battery and look at the volts,,then start the motor and rev up to 4-5K(on center stand)...the voltage should increase from 12 to 14 or so...if it doesn't the stator could be going bad,,wonder if that could be causing a weak ignition problem as well, maybe the stator falls on its face after 3k rpm or so causing the top end bog it does feed the CDI..Hmmmmm???

Mine is the same way,,if I fill it up to the bar in the tank I can go 35 miles before the gauge will even move,,but once it starts moving it drops down pretty quick..lol

Is that the blue metal eBay one that says racing on it with the timing chart on it ? Not sure,,mine is huge, with fins on it,,also has a sticker that says Progress Racing,,it barley fits in my rubber boot but I just got back from a 50 mile ride up north to the water gap and it ran perfect the whole way,,the last blue Progress I had burned up about 25 miles into a ride..I have a good black one under my seat now along with a new belt and spanner.YA know I got my 842/35/20 belt on the other day without taking the variator off,,I couldn't believe it,,you just have to make sure the belt is all the way down in the rear pulley and the variator is open,,it went right on..lol..so I guess I will order another 842 for under my seat

I remember seeing a chart somewhere that showed what each part of the carb controlled at different RPM's,,they showed the mainjet, needle, and pilot on the graph...not sure how accurate it was though..

NP,,I would buy a good one from John,,then put the ebay one under your seat in case you ever need it to get home...CDI's to me are like sliders/rollers,,I have so many cause Im always experimenting and tinkering with stuff...I put the blue Progress Racing one back in last night and it seems to be working great,,easy starts and good performance..we shall see.

Thanks Alley,, You answered my question about the air/fuel screw controlling range,,I thought it was just the idle and bottom that it controlled,,never knew it controlled the entire range
