I have this exact scooter and I did absolutely nothing to it except put her together and ride it. It is all stock from the spark plug to the belt. I change the oil with Yamalube 10W40. There's a Yamaha dealer just down the road so that's what I use. The only advice I can give is break it in according to the book. If you try to get too much out of her before she's fully broke in (about a thousand miles) the float bowl will run dry on you and she'll die. I drove 2,400 miles in the year since I've had mine and I can run at wide open throttle now all day and she runs like a champ. And it's still all stock. I haven't even changed the spark plug yet. But I'm going to do that soon as it's warming up again. The guys on this site know a lot more about scooters than do I, and they're going to tell you to do this and do that. I listened, thought it over, then decided against doing any mods and I'm glad I did. She runs just fine right out of the box. I figure if the Chinese can put a Space Station into orbit, they can certainly make a scooter. No offense fellas. It will run fine out of the box for a few years,,but eventually it will need lines, tires, valve adjust, belt and all the maintenance....also if you are running WOT all time your just asking for trouble sooner or later,,more than likely sooner....lol..I will run my scooter up to near 70mph at times and cruise 45-50 all day,,but running WOT is like smoking 2 packs of butts and drinking 12 beers a day,,it will catch up with you. Good scoot,if you like the way it runs,,just go over it and tighten everything up,,do the oil changes, lube everything,,and enjoy the ride....I ran mine stock for a few years,,a pipe,UNI POD filter, and upjet is the best thing you can do for a restricted stock motor..next scoot I get is getting that right off the bat,,just to open it up and allow the motor to run more efficient. I went for it today... an extended 27 mile ride. Since I got the scooter in Dec, I had ridden 47 miles total, the longest being 6 miles (day before yesterday). Today I took it on a much longer route, through some nice twisty foothills of the N. Ga mountains ( I live near Dahlonega). The scooter will do something above 60mph in the flats (I stopped at 60 because the limit was 50), but mostly I stuck to 50 mph (which is fantastic through banked curves, BTW). I'm really happy with all of this... a cheap winter project and now a cheap thrill! That cheap thrill will last a long time if you stick around here and take care of it by changing oil and not over revving down hills and stuff. Really fun hobby,,I would say funner than riding a big bike,,Ive had plenty of them and the 150 scoot is so much funner!!!!

Yeah,,wow that tool is really deep John,,$30,,Hmmmmmm I might get one soon as my lawns kick in this Spring.
My motor sounds different after its hot too,,when its cold it sounds the best,,seems like it gets a little chattery after its warm,,always was that way....

Wow,,thats the same exact noise it was making in your old video,,man,,glad you found it,,did you get a starter clutch socket tool to remove the backwards threaded nut or did you use a hammer and chisel like some do? I have to get that tool,,or make one out of an old socket by using a 4-1/2" angle grinder.

I just switched to a 842 and love it,,seems better both bottom and top...also it can be changed in a pinch on the side of the road without removing the variator,,its just long enough if you give the clutch a good strong squeeze you can slip it over the variator without cutting it...I was glad for that,,now I carry an 842 under my seat and found a new home for that bulky spanner I was luggin around....

Yeah,,I didn't put ant sealer on it when I put it together after gears,,,might have to take it apart one day and put a new gasket with some Indian Head Shellac,,that wont leak ever again,,even with two bolts out..lol that stuff is great for paper gaskets!

LOL,,Im glad it was the starter clutch,,you knew that right from the beginning..lol..does your gear oil leak out the back when you remove the lower bolt that holds the CVT cover on man? Mine does,,and it bugs me,,cause every time Im working on my CVT the darn oil is dripping out the back until I put that one bolt back in???Real pain..i don't remember it doing that before i did the gears,,maybe the gasket is beat or something..does yours do it?

if it was my scoot i wouldn't buy any new parts unless i knew they were bad. new piston and cylinder is fine, they are cheap enough but you could clean up the old piston as long as you don't see any scratches on the cylinder, just my opinion. soak in wd40 and you can get most of the carbon off. new parts are fun but they are not always necessary. this scoot only has a 1,000 miles on it and from the looks of it the only problem is it was running rich. put it together and try to get it started imo. then we can trouble shoot what parts may need to be ordered. also, someone mentioned checking the crankshaft to see if it has any play. if you haven't done that yet, i think it is fairly important. good luck, i'll be keeping the rest of my opinions to myself, plenty of better scooter mechanics on this site than me. You are 100% correct,,she can get away with cleaning the piston real good with a soft brass brush and some cleaner,,she will need new rings and a hone though....one of my new favorite tools is a leak down tester,,it will tell you so much,,from valves, head, rings, gaskets, seals, all of that in one tool,,I made my own from a Harbor Freight compression tester a few fittings and a air pressure regulator.A must have for any serious small engine tech or hobbyist IMO. BTW-Head nuts get torqued back in a crisscross pattern to about 17ft lbs....some say 20 but man,,mine where starting to twist anymore than 16-17. Thats plenty.

Did you clean the pet cock or fuel pump out too,,after you cleaned carb did you put the A/F screw back to where it was,if not start out about 2 turns out and follow Alleys tuning guide? I would check fuel delivery to carb from tank,,pull the fuel line off the carb and put it in a small coffee can,,then crank the motor over,,does fuel spurt out good? If so,,then you have good delivery,,you problem lies downstream from here,,could be a clogged port in the carb,,you really need to spray all of those small pin holes really good with cleaner and run a steel guitar string or piece of a wire brush through them,,make sure when you spray cleaner up through pilot jet and main,,it sprays out the ports on the intake side by butterfly..they are tiny...
How does the plug look,,wet or dry?
Thats where I would start,,if all that is good you may have an electrical issue..Ive seen a failing coil cause a stall under load.

I would see if you can get the same size BBK that you have now,,then just upjet,do the UNI pod filter, and free flow pipe. Those stock carbs are a pain sometimes to get the float bowl off or get to the A/F screw,,I got an aftermarket keihin and its awesome!
Dont forget to clock the new rings properly and check the end gap quick...also those pesky dowels,,make sure you put all of them back where they belong too.
Also you dont need a bigger carb,,just a bigger main jet for a bbk,,but a bigger carb will increase performance too,,just might not use the same size jet that the stock carb ran good with...I have a 24mm stock size on my 150 and it runs like a banshee with the BBK and the big 120 main jet.
All your ports need to match, carb, intake manifold,ect..not as important when smaller section is upstream,,like a smaller carb going into a bigger intake,,into a bigger head,,thats fine,,you just dont want to go with a big carb and smaller intake, smaller head,exhaust..ect....

Well yes the frames are welded and painted pretty crappy,,if you have a welder you can touch them up then repaint,,
i would try to run most of the wires through a black snake tube made for wires and zip tie it to the frame,or put them in a 1/2" braided stainless steel hot rod radiator hose cover and run it behind the frame,
if you are really handy you can hide alot of the wires inside the frame,,thats the best way...as for the connectors,,just flood them out with dielectric grease and find a nice spot behind the inside of the frame,,might have to make a few small covers out of steel or aluminum that run along the frame to hide stuff on that side.
I may go naked someday....going to try and land an Icebear 150 Madogg this Summer hopefully if things go well,,I have been putting alot of $$ into my kayak for Bass fishing so we will see...

Not to go off topic for long but hey John,,do you carry a decent throttle handle assembly,,the cheap one I have with my scooter cracked a little today when I was putting a new grip on? It still works but I'm picky and don't like cracked parts on my stuff.I dont need a cable just the twist grip,,anything would be better than the sloppy one it came with. Tom
