with the higher rated springs you may need to change your roller weights to get it to work better the pulley is difficult to separate even when i had it apart. you could probably run this clutch without a contra spring. (well, not really, lol) that is where the problem is, i believe. i could be wrong but it seems like a good place to start.

When changed the your clutch, did you change the variator weights? no, only change was the clutch because the needle bearings were damaged on my old clutch.

i may not know much about how a clutch works but i am learning... when you are trying to maximize speed with an engine that has very little horse power, the clutch pulley must be easy to open. i just installed a new (expensive) clutch and i lost 7 mph. i knew the pulley was difficult to open and since it came with a yellow contra spring i spent part of my day changing it with one of my old clutch springs.
one thing i noticed once i got it apart... the pulley still required force to separate. my old one moves freely with spring removed. i don't know what is inside the pulley but i am going to find out. i have 3 clutch's, none of them are working the way i expect them too. i'm going to try to make one good clutch out of all the parts.
so for all you 50cc guys that are not happy with your top speed... check to see how difficult it is to separate the clutch pulley. you probably can check to see how high the belt is riding on the variator. if it isn't riding to the outer edge and your clutch pulley is very difficult to open then the problem maybe solved with a softer contra spring, assuming your pulley separates freely when taken apart.
i'll add more to this thread when i learn more about why my pulley is so difficult to open.

This might make it easier next time. definitely... i don't have the right size socket though.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find my big 15" 'multiple sixteenths' wrench, and all my 12'' were just a titch too small. i had the same problem. i used a file and grinded a little off the jaw. fit like a glove after 10 minutes of filing. thought about removing a fragment of the thumb adjustment so it could open further but didn't have a small enough chisel.

Guess what everyone? Just bought a used 2009 Piaggio MP3 500 with 1,400 miles for $5200 out the door! I really like the extra stability with the extra tire on the ground. Granted, the maintenance will be more expensive than maintaining a Chinese scooter but I really like the quality And it's a lot more powerful than my 150cc sure maintenance will be more expensive but you should get plenty of miles in between service. those machines are well built! i put a wrench to my atm50 on average every 2 weeks. (14,000km and climbing) always seems like something needs to be done to this scoot. i'm still happy with my scoot but it does require a lot of maintenance.

got them both apart. the new clutch came with a yellow spring which i think is going to be too stiff. i don't want my engine to work too hard to get the belt all the way down in the clutch pulley.

finally got the old one apart. now on to the new one. i had to use a c-clamp, wd40 and an adjustable wrench. hope that trick works with the new one also. i wedged some cardboard between the clamp and clutch to prevent damage.

here is the scoot i am considering: www.provenpowersports.com/products/28/TaoTao-Adult-150cc-Gas-Moped-Scooter-ATM150-Ai've been very pleased with my taotao atm50. it had 8,000 km when i purchased 7 months ago. it now has about 14,000 km. it doesn't look pretty but the engine still seems to have some life left in it. i checked out the ATM150 at a local scooter dealer but they want $1499. i could justify spending an extra $200-$300 for the convenience of buying from a dealer but $500 extra... meh, i think i will buy online and do my own PDI. i'm not 100% certain what site i am going to purchase from yet. anyone have some recommendations? seems like they are about the same price at nearly every online store. anybody have a better 150cc for the same money in mind? be about 2-3 months before i can purchase unless i can make some extra money selling a few things on ebay.

i saw this video months ago. he makes it look so easy. i had to look his video up again today because i was beginning to believe the threads were reversed. how in the heck do you guys get that nut off?
i'm trying to change the contra spring on my new clutch. i'm having difficulty opening my old clutch and the new one.

I'm always amazed at how many people buy a 50 and immediately try to hop them up when 150 are not that much more, probably no more than the 50 plus mods. lacking a license is the reason i bought my atm50. it's about $300 to get a motorcycle endorsement in this state. about $250 for the class and $50 at the DMV. think i will go that route instead of doing any more mods to this scoot. hopefully it doesn't take me too many months to come up with the cash.

The 18/46 gears had good acceleration better than stock actually. But to reach 50 and beyond you'll need a big valve ported head along with performance exhaust. I ran mine with a 24mm carb no spacer some say its too big but the ports on the performance head are made for the stock 150cc manifold. You need to max everything to get speeds over 50 gears alone won't do it. Big valve head a9 camshaft 24mm carb uni filter hi pro exhaust work great together. Buford here on the forum makes the best heads they create tons of power. The head makes a huge difference in power and also determines the compression ratio. that is a very expensive head... sigh. thx for the info but not really the info i wanted to hear. maybe i should just be happy with the way it is and save my money for that 150cc afterall.

Just to add to this, as it is very correct. When ordering a shipping container from China, some factories can take up to 4 MONTHS + i've worked in a warehouse that received it's inventory from over seas. we had one container that arrived 2 months late. when it finally showed up the container had a hole about 3x6 feet. looked like they dropped the thing while loading or unloading. which is why i don't want to pay now for parts they are still waiting on. they may have a date they expect delivery but it could be days, weeks or even months longer.

i'm guessing i will need to change the gears but will a free flow exhaust and modified airbox give me more mph in the meantime? i'm going to install my new pipe soon as those jets arrive (still waiting, sigh).
i've put about 60 miles on her so far. been keeping it under 35 mph for the first 50 miles then gave it an oil change yesterday and drove it WOT for the first time. i went from a 44mm to a 50mm piston and i am not seeing any improvement with this new bbk. both top speed (about 45) and acceleration seem about the same. only noticeable difference is going up hill i can maintain speed unlike before.
gear: i have many questions about gears. i been looking at the Hoca gear sets. 16/42, 17/41 and 18/46, i know millsc had installed 18/46 and got his scoot to 58mph iicr. how strong is acceleration with 18/46? would 16/42 get you to 55mph with better acceleration? and finally does a video of installation exist? i've seen scrappydogs vid but it is a series of snap shots.
if anyone can answer any of my many questions please help. thank you!
edit: just remembered, my new clutch arrived yesterday. don't have time to install today but tomorrow i am going to work on the cvt. perhaps i can gain more mph with some transmission work.
