Most states demand that a 50cc scooter won't do over 30 mph so the distributors list specs that satisfy them. I had a stock Lance Charming and it would do 40 mph easily but my ears couldn't stand the screaming. My 50cc Kymco Like is just the same. 40 mph easily, maybe more, but the noise is horrific at any more than that. Now onto my 50cc Bashan Cub clone with four speed and centrifugal clutch. Listed at 30 mph also and, until it broke in, even I believed it. Then the engine loosened up. I've seen 55 mph on a level road. Not to mention 135 mpg with a carburetor no less. So Shhhhh. What the DMV doesn't know won't hurt them.

Inspired by Leo I just stopped by the garage to see if the '83 Kawasaki would start. I haven't fired it up since November. I had to crank and crank but it finally fired up. The new battery maintainer did its job and the battery held up until it coughed to life. Not bad for a 35 year old bike with four carbs.

My 150cc Bashan is the same way. I can let it sit for months and it fires right up. A well built scooter will do that for you.

The People. It has bigger wheels and a zippier engine. It's more sportbike than scooter.

It's a Chinese built scooter. Which is a total non issue. It's a known fact that the Chinese will build what you ask them to. Kymco builds it in their China plant to Taiwan specs.

At four grand it's an absolute bargain. Plus it will have Taiwan reliability. Look at it this way. You can have a 300cc Kymco for the price of a 50cc Vespa. $1000 less than a 150 Vespa. How can you beat that?

No more than $500 at most. Schwinns were pretty good for the time but I don't know that they would be a good idea for a steady, dependable ride. Have you thought about a motorcycle? Many older 250cc Japanese bikes would be a better idea for day to day usage.

Yesterday I rode the Rebel to work. Today I shoveled snow. Wet snow. Heavy snow. Winter stinks.

I had to ponder this for a while so I could properly state my feelings. In comparison to a Japanese motorcycle I don't feel his results were a success. Rotors, charging units and burned valves because he used regular gas? If the heat of regular gas burned his valves that's pretty lame. Many Japanese bikes run 10.5:1 compression on regular.
Ponder this. My wife's Honda Civic is running all original electrical parts at 100,000 miles. A scooter is supposed to be a car substitute. I'm betting he would have had much better return with a Honda Reflex.

I don't know. In 125,000 miles my '79 Kawasaki didn't use up electrical components. I shouldn't say it out loud but my 2008 Bashan is electrically fault free in nine and a half years and 9,700 miles. Plus, as with anything, he isn't mentioning how much bolt tightening and other maintenance he did. I guess my point is for what that scoot cost he should be doing better. It's supposed to be a European quality machine. Ask yourself if a BMW motorcycle would use that much up. I know my Honda Rebel wouldn't.

Is anybody getting virus warnings on this link? I posted it over at Modern Vespa and they're threatening to delete the post. I'm having no trouble on my IPad but I haven't checked my Windows computer yet.

All the scooters listed come from B&M dealers. I don't doubt that Tao Tao dominates. They picked GS Motorworks brain about what worked when they bought AA Scooters, the parent company. I saw Tao Tao in the flesh at Superior Scooters. They had come a long way from 2008 models.
