[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto]They wanted $40 for the helicoil kit! $40!!! On Amazon it cost $22, and your Permacoil is even cheaper. I'll order that and see how it goes. I would love to just buy the kit from Ace and repair it right now, but that's a lot of extra money I don't have to spend.
Definitely need some new friends! They're all ripoffs. Sadly all my real friends live far away or go to college far away now. I'm going to have to buy me one of those vices if I ever have to swap gears again. Bicycling all the way across town was not very fun. Not to mention my GPS malfunctioning leaving me circling a road for 10 minutes trying to find the place... Thankfully my scooter is up and running now and doing phenomenal on speed runs. I've never gone over the speed limit on a 45mph road before, and I'm happy to have finally maxxed out my speedometer.
Thanks, Domindart! All I need now is my koso variator, my 1.5k torque spring, my new carburetor jets and I'll be set. Putting a sock over my air filter stopped all the popping and there's no backfiring, but I still can't wait for my carb jets to finally get here so I can take that dumb problem-solving sock off of my air filter!
And my luck seems to be getting much better. The guy at Autozone said it was no problem that I broke the gear puller, it's under warranty so I got all $107.50 back.

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto]Thanks, Alley. I'll try looking for something like that at the hardware store and keep y'all posted. If I can't find it I'll probably just order it online because the bolt is holding up for now. I'm honestly surprised the vibration hasn't made it pop off...
Back when I first got the scooter I was very unfamiliar with a wrench and I somehow wound up tightening the drain bolt rather then loosening it and ended up stripping the hole almost completely. I immediately doused the bolt in locktite and held the bolt there until it dried, then when I put gear oil I got no leaks so I just left it like that and forgot entirely about it until now. Now that I'm more adept with the mechanics of "lefty loosy righty tighty" I believe it's time to fix it properly! Off I go, to Ace Hardware~

Aww you forgot the most important thing... Decals!
But anyways, good luck with the parts, and enjoy!

[replyingto=scootnwinn]scootnwinn[/replyingto]Well, honestly I didn't have any faith in keeping up with traffic going all the way to Elgin, and if I wanted to take a drive I'd probably be able to find a closer scooter shop. It's just that I've shopped Absolutely in the past and it takes a day or two for them to ship normally, but right after they ship it I get the package the next day. So far they haven't updated my order or given me a tracking number. If I liked calling people I'd give them a ring, but I'm just gonna sit back and let things work themselves out (unless I don't get the package in which case I'll call them). The only things I ordered were an Intake Manifold (sans the PAIR nipple), a C-clip for my kickstarter (mine comes loose sometimes because I stretched it too much when replacing my kickstarter), and a 1500rpm torque spring.
Since changing my gears I can maintain 35mph uphill and I can do 51mph on flats. So next time I probably will just go out of town to buy scooter parts rather than order online like I've had to for so long.
Thanks for the support Hank! I'm pretty impressed with the gears. My max speed was 45, now I'm hitting speeds just over 50 which means I can FINALLY go to my bank without fear of traffic. Not to mention other roads that had me afraid of maintaining speeds on which I've never even traveled on! I may finally be able to get my L-class license way over in woodstock!
So far so good with my drain bolt, it's not leaking yet, but I think I will just go buy a tap rather than waste money on a temporary solution. That's a very good idea. Thanks, again Hank!

So after getting the gear pressed at the shop, I barely rested and went straight to putting my bike back together. First I put the gear box back together and realized I forgot the nylon washer so I tried taking it apart, but the shaft was stuck to the bearing so I pulled and pulled and finally got it out, unfortunately the bearing came with it. So I had to pry the bearing off gently and slowly (so as not to break it) just in order to put the nylon washer on. Then I put the gearbox all together and tried turning the tire shaft to see if it would move... It wouldn't. I tried really hard and finally got it to move a few degrees but otherwise it was impossible to move. So I opened it back up and noticed my sharpie mark was on the wrong side of the big gear. So I just flipped that around and put it back together, turned the shaft, both shafts turned! With ease. So I put my wheel, muffler, clutch, cvt cover, etc. all back on and started it up. Put it on the center stand and revved the engine and watched that tire turn. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I took it for a test drive to the post office and picked up my mail. Still no package from Absolutely Scooters even though I ordered from them on the same day as I ordered from scrappys AND they're only located an hour away from me. If there was some mistake and my package gets delivered today then I might continue buying from them, but if not this is going to be the last time I ever order from Absolutely Scooters. I ordered the damn clutch spring from them last wednesday because they normally ship the thing really fast and it only takes one day to get here because the shop is located an hour away... But it's almost been a week now. I forgot I completely stripped my gear oil drain bolt and the only thing holding it on was loc-tite. So I'm gonna have to do something about that... For some reason it's not leaking out from anywhere I'm almost thinking of plugging the hole with JB-Weld since gear oil doesn't have to be changed very often, then I could just drill out the hole in a few thousand miles. I don't know. I'll figure something out...

Okay, so I called around and of course nobody was willing to give me a ride no matter how much money I offered.
So I biked all the way across town to the machine shop and finally had my gears pressed. I asked them how much it would cost and they said don't worry about it, but I was all "shut up and take my money" and gave the guy $5 for some beer after work.
It was about an hour there and back. Damn, am I dripping sweat...

[replyingto=millsc]millsc[/replyingto]Yeah, it was very rough experimenting with different methods trying to get the gear off. I didn't realize it would be this difficult or I would've just waited a day to go to the machine shop. Unfortunately my mail comes late, at around 2:30p.m. and the machine shop closes early, I'm not sure how early but at 3:30 when I took my gears out they didn't answer the phone. So I went ahead with all the DIY methods possible.
I've tried vices, a bench vice, hammers, blocks of wood, anything to get the gear off. Finally the hammer and two blocks of wood did the trick, but as I did that the nylon washer I forgot to take off flew into the grass somewhere and my brother has yet to mow the yard so it's long gone.
So I had to pay a bunch of money, first for a ride to autozone for the gear puller, then to Ace Hardware to find a nylon washer.
Now I'm gonna have to pay another $10 just to get a ride to the machine shop...

I am heavily addicted to caffeine. I drink at least half a pot every day along with a bunch of soda. I know it's not the healthiest but I just can't function without it. I drink mine with a bunch of sugar and some vanilla almond milk. My mom likes to get Folgers, but I don't much care for it because it reminds me of work at the sod farm when I was young... Otherwise I'm not too particular on the brand.

YEah... So I froze the shaft for two hours, then baked the gear for 25 minutes at 420. It still wouldn't fit together. I wailed on the thing with a hammer and it wouldn't go in. D8
I guess now I wait for a ride to the machine shop... There goes another $10.

[replyingto=alleyoop]alleyoop[/replyingto] I tried with the shaft in the freezer, but I didn't torch up the gear. I'll try this again and if it doesn't work I'll just go to that darn machine shop. Thanks Alley. For laughing at my pain and for the advice.

I love doing the electrical work, installing new switches, new lights, outlets, etc. It's just so easy how could you not replace them with shiny new ones?! I do a lot of work around the house, painting, carpentry, plumbing, anything you're supposed to pay a professional for I normally have to learn how to do it. I'm more of an artistic type too, but then you just turn your work into an art project! Like, when I painted my brother's room I painted a really big yin-yang with chess pieces as the little circles. I hate doing household chores, but I love doing work on the house, or even the yard.

[replyingto=scootnwinn]scootnwinn[/replyingto]It's dirty now, I'm not using that. Ew.
But anyways... I now have my bike all taken apart in the garage and I can't get the gear back on. So tomorrow I'm going to go to that machine shop and see about getting it pressed on. It was easy enough banging the gear off, but I'm afraid of ruining the thing banging it back on.
One thing I forgot to take note of was the gear angles... I guess I'll try lining them up and then marking them with a sharpie to figure out how they go back in. This is by far the most tedious thing I've ever done to my scooter. Gods it better be worth it...
