when i was 11 - 12 i fished golf balls out of the water hazard with a friend and sold them to the golfers for 50 cent each. 25 cent if they had any nicks. i don't know if you can count that as a job. we didn't work hard but still made good money for a kid. about $25 each every time we went. at 13 i mowed lawns, had 4 customers. was paid $5, $6, $10 and $25. hated cutting the $25 yard, it took me 3 hours. i gave that yard up when i got my honda spree. my 1st job with a paycheck was washing dishes at a banquet hall at the age of 15 for $3.35/hr... meh $3.35? now that i think about it that $25 yard wasn't so bad after all. lol Golf Balls out of ponds..in Florida??? omg Sir...ever hear the term 'Gator Bait'... We did some training down there..in Dade County. Took a day off to go Bass fishing. I stood on the shore and kept hearing a 'pop' sound..and growl? Thought it was a stray cat. Looked down at my feet and it was a gator! Tossed my 70 dollar Shimano rod and ran like a lil girl to my car. They cruise through the water with no wake..never saw it coming...even a tiny minno leaves a wake. Talk about Stealth killers...

Mine was building display plastic model cars for a hobby shop. I was 12...AMT Models ran monthly contests with some neat prizes for kids building their model cars. I got good at clean, dust-free, run-free paint, chopping and channeling, fabbing up full wire-harnesses and pipes, and fully working lights on the little 1:24 scale wonders. Drove the other kids NUTZ... LOL! I ended up winning the contests most of the time... (not that I was THAT good, the other entries were probably THAT bad... HeHeHe)... Anyway, the hobby shop said it was "demoralizing" to the other entries, and they needed a builder for display models. They'd pay me $100 a week to build the models by AMT, Revelle and Johan, and clerk in the store, if I'd quit entering my cars in their contests. My Dad had a GOOD job in a real estate office, making $ a week at the time!My Dad was proud as a peacock that his 12-year-old son was making more money than he was. Not all dads would be like that. He was VERY special. That was in 1957 and child-labor laws frowned on us little nippers working full-time. My Mom and Dad had to jump through hoops just to get me a Social Security number, and get the authorities and grade school to go along with it, but my teachers were sympathetic, and we got it done! Really made a difference to the family in hard times, and allowed me to save up enough to get a car AND a bike when I turned 16. Of course, you could get a GOOD used car for $75 and a good used Harley for $250... Gas was 20-cents a gallon and car insurance was un-heard-of... A man making $100 a week could own a modest house, a good car and raise two kids while mom stayed home and kept the little miscreants out of street-gangs... Those were good days.Ward and June Cleaver, and Ozzie and Harriet Nelson would have been proud.Work hard... Ride safe! Leo (not workin' so much anymore...) in Texas

oldchopperguy You have a few year's on me Sir. But your absolutely right the world has sure changed. Thanks Truly Dave My friend, these days, sometimes I feel like I have a few years on Methuselah... LOL! I'm 67, my Wife's 81 and my Grandma saw the Wright Brothers fly at Kittyhawk. Her Grandma saw Abe Lincoln. (My Wife's first "ride" to a back-woods Maine schoolhouse was a horse). She graduated to a Model A Ford in the forties, and didn't get a "modern" car until the mid 70's. A lot HAS changed since I was a kid; most for the worse, but some for the better. Back in "my day" a new family car cost $1,000 to $2,500 brand-new (unless you had VERY expensive taste) but, a new Vespa or Cushman Eagle STILL cost around $600 to $800. Same price in dollars as a new cheapie Chinese 150! And those old dollars from my youth are only worth 10-cents in today's bucks... EXCEPT on a Chinese scooter!Amazing! And, modern scoots are much better, and more fun to ride. Now, if I could only find my meds, maybe I could remember where I left my scooter...LOL! OOPS... Forgot! It's still apart in the driveway... Enjoy your youth... It doesn't last very long... Trust me on that one! Leo (aging like cheap, plastic-bagged wine in a cardboard box) in Texas

I was about 12, thought I was being hired just to mow a lawn, when I got done with that I was told to clean the pool filter, then he wanted me to use a belt sander on a broken diving board he was trying to repair, then one thing and then another. I probably would have liked it if I had been told at the start I was going to be the family yard man/whatever else they wanted done. All I knew was that I was asked to mow a lawn and he wouldn't pay me, kept wanting me to do one thing and then another, I got mad. Finally got paid and I think he paid me about 60 cents an hour.
The next job was a lot better and I knew up front what I was being hired for.
