if your getting backfire its a bad intake valve allowing hot combustion gas to mix in the intake pipe
you need a full valve job
a bigger carb will exacerbate the problem but I am sure the shop would be happy to sell you one and then recommend something else they can sell you that wouldn't fix the problem either
if your carb is small that will effectively drop your power band and increase torque at the cost of high rpm power the easy fix for that is heavier variator weight

Sounds to me like you need to go up a size on the pilot jet. You didn't say if you changed the pilot, after your rebuild. Popping thru the carb, just off of idle, or as you start to accelerate from a stop, is caused by a lean condition, prior to the main jet coming into play. A slightly larger pilot jet will cure this problem.
