The Hondas I'm talking about are the bigger Elites like the 150, 250 and Helix. If you look in the tech tips #2 on ch250.net you'll see what I mean. There are some really useful ideas at that site.
So far as I know, Yamaha ran their rollers dry.

The Honda service manuals from the 80's specify a small amount of Lithium grease on the rollers before assembly. That turns into a black goo, mostly around the inside edge of the variator because the spinning force sends it there. Every variator I've opened has that goo in it.
As the variator gets dry over time the rollers do rattle, especially at idle or when throttling down. It's pretty normal, but does sound like a bucket of bolts.

Did that plug fall against the exhaust pipe? Make sure everything is zip tied up, away from that hot pipe.
