That bogging you describe with the heat/cool cycle is also a symptom of when the ignition pickup starts to fail. A problem I experienced on my Lance Vintage 150. Scrappy Dog had the High Output DC CDI with matching coil along with the ignition pickup at reasonable cost. The plug on the ignition pickup did not mach but I just spliced (soldered a Western Union splice which is a linemans wire knot and covered with shrink tubing) the one from the old pickup in-line and it worked just fine .
Valves set too loose have been known to cause crankcase pressure to build up since they will close too early on intake and open late on the exhaust stroke developing excessive blow by and an oily engine.

It seems like all the easy bases have been covered.
Your oil leakage may be the key. Try this, disconnect your plug wire, remove your oil dipstick and turn the motor over a couple of revolutions. If you shoot oil out across the floor, (not just a mist) it is possible you have a broken ring. We have had this happen before, symtoms, WOT issues and oil all over the engine.

All hoses are in good standing. One of things I do for a living is build things that don't exist. I am an engineer and can make anything. So when I do something, I do it the right way. The coil and cable are brand new. Now they are not the high performance, but they are brand new. The CDI is brand new and high performance. But like I said, that didn't fix the problem. I am going to try the oil thing. I have covered all the obvious stuff. It's something inside. I have been kind of thinking it was a blown ring. I think the hesitations are the lack of good compression. I just got another scooter that I really like. The motor is in great shape, it's just the body is beat to . So I am going to fix it up, and ride it, then just break down the other scooter completely and rebuild it. I really like the scooter.

I am a heck of a mechanic, Carbs, Motor, Trannies, CVTs etc.. and for the life of me I am trying to picture how a blown ring in a scooter would spill oil all over the motor and NOT create a cloud of smoke at any speed. Now if it was a Valve leaking it would smoke only on initial starts till it warmed up. But a blown ring you would not let people behind you see the road. Alleyoop

I am a heck of a mechanic, Carbs, Motor, Trannies, CVTs etc.. and for the life of me I am trying to picture how a blown ring in a scooter would spill oil all over the motor and NOT create a cloud of smoke at any speed. Now if it was a Valve leaking it would smoke only on initial starts till it warmed up. But a blown ring you would not let people behind you see the road. Alleyoop Good point. But I was thinking more of the reason it's bogging down more than the leak. Here's one for you.... Ok. Two of my scooters have the HP air filters on them. My new scooter had it already, and I put one on my troubled one. I have heard over and over how you suppose to up-jet if you use one of those filters. Well.... I went and bought two sets of jets. Two main jets that are 115. And two idle jets are 40's. I was going to put them on the two scooters. I started with my new scooter, because it flies! I put the new jets in it, made some adjustments, and took it for a ride. It was worse, and I mean way worse. Lost about 10mph, and it had the hesitations. Almost like what my other scooter is doing. So I changed back the main jet, I kept the idle jet, and it started zooming again. I think it was flooding the carb. Maybe it's altitude versus the local gas, that I don't need to use bigger jets. I don't know. All I know is it made it worse. When I can, I am going to pull the jets off the Lance scooter and see what's on there. I might try going smaller just to see.

Don't even have to put my thinking cap on to tell you what you did wrong that caused them to run worse. First the #40 Pilot jet is to big second the Main jet was also to big. If you read one of my previous posts I said LEAVE the pilot jet and if you slap on a free flow filter you go up 2 sizes on the main jet. If you also put on a free flow exhaust you again add another 2 sizes to your main pretty simple stuff. You may get away with a #38 Pilot jet but you will have to adjust the Fuel Ratio and Lean it out.
People think well I will just slap in really big jets for more speed that is not the way it works. Simple example when you eat something you take a fork or spoon and put some food on it and shove it in your mouth you chew and swallow. Now Fill your mouth with twice that amount of food and you have trouble chewing and only swallowing part of it at a time you cannot swallow the whole amount.
Can't be the altitude or gas the other scoots live in the same place and they run good. Alleyoop

I did read what you said... and I remember everything anyone ever says to me... I'm a freak that way.
I also asked the guy that works on these things every day, at the local shop, and he set me up with what he uses.
So 110 or 115, how can that matter? I don't know what the one is that is on there, but by looking, the difference is barely anything. So how much difference can "15" be? We're talking microns here. Is it that sensitive?
I left the idle jet in there, because I always thought the scooter idled too high to make sure it stays running. With the bigger jet I was able to lower the throttle and the idle screw is turned maybe a quarter of a turn, and it stays running nicely. I like how it's idling now.
I'll play around with it. Maybe I will go back and see what other main jets they have and try one a little smaller than the 115, but bigger than what's in there.

Well you read but did not listen, did I not say that if its a 24mm carb it comes with a #35 and that is fine!! and that to go 108-110. You have to realize two sizes up allows quite of bit more fuel to pass through. I have a bored out 157QMJ which is now 182cc motor and I have a #38 Pilot jet. The guy that works on them every day as you say should know better. If your pilot jet is 107 you can go to 110 if it is a 105 go with the 108, if its a 103 go with a 105. Pilot jet go with a #35. Well you read but did not listen... And there is where you are wrong. Telling me that I didn't listen gets me riled. Because that has negative cogitations of being simple, and that I am not. I listened to you, I took your advice. I tried to up-jet the carb didn't I? Now when it came to actually buying the jets, I have you, a person I have never met before and have no measurement of validity of your suggestions... Or this person who I am standing right in front of and that has helped me before. Technically I went with the logical answer. The answer by odds I should have taken. It's just that the logical answer doesn't always mean the right answer. The only thing you can say is that I did not take your advice, I took another persons and his was wrong. You can't say that I didn't listen... I listen. Now... The jet that was in the scooter only has the markings of "14".. I think. It was something like that. Something that didn't match the rankings of the main or the pilot jet, I know that. I also know that the one that was in there was smaller. I will go tomorrow and see what other jets they have and pick out something closest to what you say. But if they don't work... I'm so going to let you have it. Thanks for the help. I am a learner, and I listen. Always.

Sorry I did not mean to offend you but you even quoted me when I said to leave the #35. And you then went ahead and put in #40 and a #115, but now I see you went and asked someone else and took his advice. And that is fine most folks will take the advice from someone they know and especially when it is given face to face. All I can say he has some learning to do about motors and scooters. I will leave it at that because I do have a name for most of the scooter shops mechanics and most of the folks on here now what I call them. Now I also mentioned that if you bought this used that the previous owner may have changed out the jets so you have to check what is in there and correct them if they are way out of line for what was added to the motor performance wise. Again sorry for upsetting did not mean to do that at all. But I did not realize you went elsewhere. It's no big deal. You didn't really offend me. I was playing mostly. I will give what you say a try. And you might be right. The person before me might have changed the jets, but I don't think so. That's what I have been doing with it so far. Fixing everything the guy before me did to it. You should see how he put the high performance air filter on. But first, look how I put mine on... That's how I did it. That's how I put a high performance component onto an engine. How he did it, was to cut the end off of the stock plastic air filter box and use that piece as the extension, with hose clamps and some silicone. It's really ugly. So if a person puts something like that on there, do you really think they would have changed the jets? I don't think so, and the jets are corroded. They are not shiny. But I do know that a 115 is too much. That's something learned. I also know that the jet that is in there is smaller. So I would say try a 110 or something like that. What ever they have. We'll see how much those microns of differences can do.

Of course what do I know, I have only been around mechanics and working on motors and such for over 47 years. Someday I will be as good as you Jim

OK it seems that this motor to say the least is a real needle in the haystack and IMO some of the best suggestions by all have come out here so not only do we want this scooter to run right it has become a mission in doing so. When we do figure it out then not only will it be a thread to remember for future problems like this I'm going to personally salute the suggestion that fixes it. I've read this very closely and I can relate to what Jim said on a couple of things myself as far as pressurizing the crankcase due to a ring problem, one was on a old time favorite that Jim, Alley and myself remember and that's the old 235 straight six Chevy of the 50's and 60's. Two things come to mind from that old solid lifter engine, (1) a ring journal can break or crack and she'll blow oil even out of the oil cap cover (2) if all the rings line up for any reason with the break in the ring all lined up she'll do the same thing, as the piston rises on the compression stroke it'll blow back to the crankcase yet not smoke. Ya forgot, that one Alley. I had to think back myself and I had that happen to me on a old Clinton engine once, remember the look alike Clintons of yester year that copied the B&S ones. My dad had some choice words for that lawn mower that I can't say here! Also I'll throw out some food fro thought? Colorado? High elevation? Should we not hold the jets down to a stock size and try to get her extra air say with a unifilter? Yes she has other scooters that are doing fine but this one for whatever reason is being a problem child kind of like the old saying in the family, the black sheep. Let's put our heads together and if one thing that common sense says it doesn't work scratch it and we go back to the drawing board. It's a conquest now so get your pencils out! JR

i have been reading all of this tread and what i have come up with is the cvt have you check the belt at high rpms it will climb to the top of the variator and could be slipping and also when the belt is hot it will streach out it maybe a long shot but it does make sence
